Crackled Malachite and African Wild Olive I
We have reshaped two wood and malachite-green pens that we were not entirely happy with, and now we are happy. In fact: very.
We love African wild olive for its figured grain and rich, tawny colour. The rough, textured grain of the wood is accentuated by the resin Di made in a crackled malachite pattern, and as you write the combined effect is a warm, natural feel. Specks you can see in the photos are actually sparkles inside the resin – this pen almost glows from within.
The wood for these pens comes from an old tree in the Cederberg that we knew well as it grew outside the shed where Dave had his workshop. It eventually succumbed to a massive wild fire that burnt down the entire farm in 2013, with only our home and one other building withstanding the inferno. It says a lot about the hardness of the wood that, although the fire killed the tree, and the trunk lay outdoors in all weathers for many years, the wood inside was still beautiful and usable.
The reason we have to charge a premium price for wooden pens is due to the fact that wood itself is not sufficiently rigid to hold a “thread” (i.e. the spiral groove that enables you to screw the cap on to the barrel.) For each pen, Dave therefore needs to make two virtually invisible inserts that he cuts the threads into; one that fits inside the cap and the other inside the pen barrel. Hence it takes roughly twice as much time to make a wooden pen as to make one from most other materials. Nonetheless, we believe they are worth the extra effort.
Wooden pens are sometimes susceptible to ink stains, so in the case of these two pens, Dave has not only made the resin inserts to protect the insides of the cap and barrel, but has also covered the outside of the wood with a thin waterproof film which ought to keep them safe.
