Moons of Jupiter fountain pen : Amalthea

This is the third in the series: The Moons of Jupiter, and represents what we think Amalthea, which is one of Io’s moons, (which in turn is one of Jupiter’s moons!) might look like, against the blackness of space. Capped, this pen looks dark and one needs to look closely to notice the moons. Uncapped the pinkish-garnet of the grip section accentuates the understated elegance of the moons.

According to NASA’s Solar System Exploration website :

“Amalthea is the reddest object in the solar system and it appears to give out more heat than it receives from the sun. This may be because, as it orbits within Jupiter’s powerful magnetic field, electric currents are included in the moon’s core. Alternatively, the heat could be from tidal stresses.

“Amalthea and Thebe rotate on their axes once for each orbit around Jupiter, always keeping the same side facing the planet. This orbit takes about one-half an Earth day for Amalthea and two-thirds an Earth day for Thebe.

“Amalthea and the moon Thebe provide the material for the Gossamer ring.”

I love the sound of the Gossamer ring (though I have no idea what it means. Another excuse though to go down another rabbit hole …)

The NASA website also explains the origin of the name Amalthea: “Amalthea is named for a naiad who nursed the newborn Jupiter. Amalthea is often depicted with a goat, whose milk is said to have fed the infant Jupiter.”
