Moons of Jupiter fountain pen : Valetudo

This is the first in the series: The Moons of Jupiter. The coppery garnet in this fountain pen represents what we think one of Jupiter’s 79 moons, Valetudo, might look like, against the blackness of space. Discovered in 2017, this moon is a maverick. Whereas most of its larger moons follow Jupiter’s direction of rotation (and are therefore known as prograde moons), some of the others which are further out orbit in the opposite direction, (and are known as retrograde moons.) And then there’s Valetudo, which doesn’t follow the rules. It is travelling at the same distance as the retrograde moons, but in the opposite direction.

According to atlastobscura.com, Valetudo even crosses the orbits of the other moons. Quoting Scott Shepherd, who led the team that found this moon, “It’s basically like you’re driving down the highway in the wrong direction. Cars are coming right at you, and it’s very likely you’re going to have some head-on collision” … at some stage in the next billion or so years.

We cannot help but admire a renegade moon.
