Sugarbush Protea fountain pen

This handcrafted fountain pen signals the start of our new Fynbos Series. The colours in this in-house resin are inspired by the Sugarbush Protea, known in Afrikaans as the suikerbossie protea. We are fortunate to live in the middle of the fynbos, one of the planet’s richest areas in terms of plant biodiversity. Our Sunday cycle rides take us into the most spectacular fynbos and the past few weeks we have been gifted with dewdrops shaken from Sugarbush Protea bushes as we ride by. The flower gets its name from the fact that birds and baboons enjoy the plentiful sweet nectar that gathers inside the flower, especially after rain or heavy dew. In fact humans have been enjoying this delicacy for centuries.

We have tried to capture the combination of colours that are found in an individual protea flower, ranging from the palest creamy yellow to a a rich chartreuse, to a lime green; as well as the bright coppercolour of the fluff surrounding the seeds. One can always tell when a troop of baboons have been feasting on an area of protea bushes as they trash the bushes and scatter half-snacked-on flower heads all around. Clearly some seeds get overlooked as this is one of the protea’s primary means of distribution and propagation.
